A TIME TO PLANT

Towards the end of the twentieth century, as pioneers began to flock to Israel, Tu B’Shevat acquired a new meaning and purpose. In 1890, Rabbi Ze’ev Yafetz organized a Tu B’Shevat trip to an experimental agricultural settlement called Zichron Yaakov to plant trees. The settlement eventually became the home of Carmel wines, the first vineyard of modern Israel. And the practice of planting trees on Tu B’Shevat became popular, especially among schoolchildren. By 1908, the Jewish Teachers Association and later the Jewish National Fund were promoting the custom. Today, about half a million people in Israel participate in tree planting every year on Tu B’Shevat.4
